More details about our script stage.
To begin script stage, you’ll submit a detailed form that will give us a detailed outline of how you might be cast-able and the type of scenes you are interested in shooting. We’ll then set you up in our Project Management correspondence software, a dedicated online platform accessible via mobile or desktop. Here we’ll correspond further with you and our writing team and upload your scripts written specifically for you.
Remember, at Showreels Australia we want to ensure that your scene is unique which means we are happy to say that we have never shot the same scene twice since forming our company in 2008. Why? Well who wants to watch the same scene from the same films and TV shows over and over again simply replacing the actor? That certainly isn’t unique and no matter how hard you try to make it your own, its distracting. Why? Because your audience will be comparing your performance to the original or trying to figure out where it is from. Instead, we aim to have your audience engaged in your performance without the distractions.
During script stage you’ll be able to submit any script reference ideas you may have in the form of links or upload documents to our Project Manager. Our writers will provide a draft of each scene for you to approve. Our writing team are almost always spot in with your scripts however we do allow for one full re-write per scene or one round of specific feedback to amend a scene. After this point if further re-writes or amendments are required (extremely rare) we’ll discuss any additional fees to continue into a new round of re-writes.
Although we offer custom scenes written from scratch specifically for you, if you have a particular existing scene in mind that you would like filmed please send it through. We’ll assess the scene then ensure it will fit our company guidelines (such as nothing recognisable, over done, or heavily reliable on context) and offer any feedback. Showreels Australia has a great relationship with casting directors within the industry and having been creating showcases for actors since 2008 we have a great understanding about what works best with showreels, so you are in good hands.
More details about scene partners and casting.
When it comes to scene partners, we encourage you to allow us to make the casting decisions for you. We ensure all scene partners that we cast are appropriate for the role and have a professional on set presence to support you while filming. Our scene partner database is increasing daily and there is always someone who is willing to jump on board to help you through production.
The catch? All scene partners agree to Terms & Conditions that limit them from claiming the completed scene as their own so you can feel safe with your scenes. Our scene partners will be provided with a digital copy of the complete scene and are encouraged to use a small section of the scene in amongst other existing material for their own showreel. All existing Showreels Australia clients who have completed showreel scenes with us are automatically added to this database and its very common that we ask you to come back and return the favour helping out a new client (meaning you’ll in turn receive new material to add to your own showreel.)
Of course, if you have friends or industry contacts who you would like to cast as your scene partners you are welcome to do so. We would simply advise that you think seriously about any friend you may want to involve and if they are both appropriate for the role and matching in performance skill to yourself. Any scene partner that you arrange who arrives on set for shooting automatically agrees to our scene partner Terms & Conditions to ensure your work is protected.
More details about locations and location sourcing.
All Showreels Australia scenes are shot on location. We’ll require you to source your locations appropriate to your scenes. Again ensuring your work stands out and is unique, we don’t shoot in the same location twice (unless that location holds multiple options in a large area such offices, larger houses with multiple areas that can look different.)
As you can imagine, having shot hundreds of scenes since 2008 we no longer have favours to call in for locations free of charge, however if you are finding it difficult to source the right spot yourself, we do offer a location sourcing service. Our location fee is $275 Inc GST per location which covers our time to find the right location, arrange and pay for private or public permits along with payment to any person who either must vacate the premises for the duration of the shoot or be present while shooting.
We’ll get you to brainstorm some location ideas during your Script Stage Submission Form. Know someone who owns a great warehouse, cafe, bar, island resort? Let us know and we might just have a scene that can work with that! Otherwise, remember you can always ask family and friends and never rule out a Facebook post requesting help, you’ll be surprised how 150 of your Facebook friends can offer suggestions so quickly.
More details about the production process with your showreel shoots.
Your shoot dates will be locked in via our online booing system at the bottom of this page. You’ll automatically be sent a booking confirmation receipt and a reminder will be sent a few days before the shoot. (Just in case!)
We’ll work on set for around an hour rehearsing the scene and blocking it out before shooting for around 2 hours. You’ll get around 75% of the time in front of the camera and the rest will be covering your scene partner in a few takes to cut away from you in the edit while we switch takes and find your best performances. Once we complete shooting for your first scene, we’ll have a short lunch/dinner break and then move location (if required).
All scenes are captured in full 1080P HD using 35mm lenses to give you that great cinematic feel. Lighting and grip equipment are used as needed including dolly’s and handheld rigs (depending on what feel your director is aiming for in the scene for you.) Sound is recorded in high definition quality with a high quality boom microphones (no time wasted hiding and adjusting lapel radio mics).
More details about the post-production editing of your showreel.
Once we’ve completed both shoots it generally takes around 3 weeks to receive the completed scenes and Speed Reel. We spend over 15+ hours editing each scene ensuring the best performance and character journey for you along with keeping the high production quality standard that you would have seen on our website and in the video gallery above.
We take great pride in pointing out that on top of our focus on your performance during editing, we also work on ensuring the production quality of the final product is of the highest standard. This includes taking the time to focus on sound design and dialogue levelling to remove unwanted hisses, disguise cutting points and create a sound scape that you would expect in any major film or TV production. On top of this, we take the time to ensure your scene is underscored with professional standard production music appropriate to your scene and enhancing your performance rather than creating a distraction. To top it off we finish your scene with a professional colour grade, bring out the best in visual quality.
So what do you get? You’ll receive both completed scenes as separate pieces along with a Speed Reel that takes the highlights of each piece to create a 60-90 second primary showreel. If you have existing material you would also like included in your Speed Reel, please let us know and we can advise wether it may be better to upgrade to a Trailer Reel (3 minute edit) if you have enough content.
We’ll provide you with a high resolution HD MP4 file for each piece (3 master files) which can be used to upload to your Showcast, AT2 and any other hosting account you may have. These files can also be used to add to your Youtube and Vimeo accounts. Remember, we’ll also add your completed pieces to our Showreels Australia Youtube Channel and our website gallery to ensure maximum exposure of your new reel.
